Migrating IBM Data Product Hub to IBM watsonx.data intelligence as a Service

In your IBM Cloud account, if you have the Data Product Hub service provisioned in the following regions: Dallas, Sydney or Toronto, you should migrate to the watsonx.data intelligence service in the same region. This service provides the same data sharing capability, along with data governance and lineage capabilities. You’ll be able to access your existing Data Product Hub content in watsonx.data intelligence by following the procedure below.

This table outlines components of Data Product Hub that are preserved and that require migration when you move to watsonx.data intelligence.
Preserved components Migration required
• Data Product Hub community
• Users and user groups
• Data products: draft, published, retired
• Subscriptions
• Connections
• Business domains
• Monitoring dashboard
• Custom properties
• Storage configurations
• Task inbox
• IAM roles for users and groups
• Projects created in the Data Product Hub instance

Procedure

You will be able to access your existing Data Product Hub content in watsonx.data intelligence by following the steps below:

  1. If you have the following instances, you should provision or upgrade to watsonx.data intelligence with a Trial, Essentials, Standard or Premium plan in the same region:

    1. Data Product Hub only: Provision watsonx.data intelligence. For more details, see Setting up the IBM watsonx.data intelligence service.
    2. Data Product Hub and watsonx.data intelligence (formerly known as IBM Knowledge Catalog):
      1. If you previously had a IBM Knowledge Catalog instance with a Lite, Standard, or Enterprise Bundle Plan, you have to upgrade your plan to a watsonx.data intelligence plan. See Upgrade the service to the appropriate plan for more details. You can check your current plan in the Catalog management page.
      2. If you have already provisioned a watsonx.data intelligence instance with a Trial, Essentials, Standard or Premium plan, proceed to step 2.
  2. Assign permissions for watsonx.data intelligence:

    1. Existing users and groups who are a part of the Data Product Hub community will be a part of the Data Product Hub community in watsonx.data intelligence. However, they must also be granted the appropriate IAM permissions for watsonx.data intelligence, see User roles and permissions for watsonx.data intelligence.
    2. New users and groups must be granted permissions for watsonx.data intelligence in IAM before they are added to the Data Product Hub community in watsonx.data intelligence.
Roles IAM Roles Permission DPH Community Role
Administrators Data Product Hub Admin cp4d.data-product-hub.admin Admin
Data Producers Data Product Provider cp4d.data-product.provide Editor
Data Consumers Data Product Consumer cp4d.data-product.consume Editor or Viewer
  1. Launch the watsonx.data intelligence instance.

  2. Migrate Projects to watsonx.data intelligence:

    1. In the watsonx.data intelligence homepage, select the Switch projects icon switch projects in the Projects tile.
    2. Select all of the projects that were created in the Data Product Hub instance. To migrate all the projects, multiple users will have to complete this step as a user can only switch the projects that they have Admin access to.
    3. Click the Switch projects button and a message will appear saying that the Project migration is successful
  3. Delete the Data Product Hub instance in IBM Cloud:

    1. Important: Before you delete the Data Product Hub instance, ensure that the instance is in same region as the watsonx.data intelligence instance you created. For example, if you provisioned a watsonx.data intelligence instance in Dallas, delete the Data Product Hub instance that is set in Dallas.
    2. Go the navigation menu then click on Resource list > Analytics and select the Data Product Hub instance you want to delete.
  4. You can access Data Product Hub in watsonx.data intelligence by going to the navigation menu and selecting Data > Data products.

Billing and Usage

If you have both Data Product Hub instance as well as a watsonx.data intelligence instance, you will only be billed by the watsonx.data intelligence plan. For more information, see Billing and Usage.
